Vincent D. Reilly
Contributor
Vincent Reilly was sports editor of the Daily News-Record from 1947 until his passing in 1963 at the early age of 44. He wrote a popular column called “Up the Middle” in which he reported on the events and lives of the subject he loved the best – high school sports and athletes. Vincent participated in football and basketball at HHS, but was not a star athlete. Perhaps that is the reason that substitutes received equal billing with the stars in his columns.
Vincent left high school in January, 1941 to join the Army and served until December, 1945. He returned to Harrisonburg and graduated from Shenandoah College, which was then in Dayton. Vincent is best remembered for his positive approach to high school athletes, always promoting them and never criticizing their mistakes on the field or the court. His contemporaries described him as the model that all sports writers should strive to be. His legacy lives on with the Vincent D. Reilly Award, which is bestowed annually upon the HHS Senior who demonstrates the highest standards of academic effort, athletic participation and good sportsmanship.
