An outstanding 3 sport athlete at HHS, Charlie was a pitcher on the baseball team and an all-around player in basketball. Charlie excelled in football, where he was the quarterback of the team. After HHS, Charlie spent a year at Augusta Military Academy, then joined the army during WW II. He received a medical discharge and entered the University of Virginia.
At UVA he was quarterback of the football team. He was named the Associated Press “Back of the Week” after leading UVA to an upset win over a military pre-flight team quarterbacked by NFL Hall-of-Famer Otto Graham. After completing his eligibility he followed Coach Russell to Marquette and then to the University of Cincinnati, serving as assistant coach at each place. Charlie played baseball in the Valley League and spent a season at William & Mary helping the team develop the T-Formation.
