Athlete
Joe Myers was a three sport athlete at HHS, playing 3 years of baseball, 3 years of basketball and 4 years of football. Joe recalls one baseball season when Fuzzy Bowers pitched that he played right field and not a single ball was hit to him all season.
Joe was the center on the football team and a member of the 1943 and 1944 state championship teams. After graduating from HHS Joe went on to the University of Virginia. He played football his freshman year, then spent the next two years in the military. He returned to UVA and was the starting center on the football team for the next three years. He remembers that he broke his nose “at least 10 times.”
After graduating from UVA he spent several years with the FBI before returning home to Harrisonburg. Joe became a teacher and coach at HHS and was the head football coach for 3 years following the retirement of Coach Warren. Joe was the principal of Thomas Harrison Junior High and retired as an administrator in the Central Office of the Harrisonburg School System.
