Sarah Sampson was a three sport athlete at the Lucy Simms High School from 1951 – 1954. She played softball, volleyball and basketball, though basketball was her main sport. Sarah played basketball all 4 years of high school and the 1952 team was undefeated. She averaged about 25 points per game, and according to Sarah “my hook shot was the one people talked most about.” The team had to travel considerable distances to play games, going to places like Roanoke, Petersburg and St. Paul’s.
After high school Sarah entered Virginia State College in Petersburg, but returned home to Harrisonburg before completing her degree. Her 3 children, Ralph, Jr, Valerie and Joyce were outstanding athletes at HHS and a grandson is enrolled as a freshman at the University of Minnesota on a basketball scholarship. Sarah has been active in community affairs for many years, She is a member of Hope Community Builders, Treasurer of the local chapter of the NAACP and an active member of Bethel A.M.E. Church.
