From 1979 through 1981 Dwight Blakey was a star performer for the Blue Streak basketball and football teams. As a sophomore he was a member of the 1979 state championship basketball team and in 1980 and 1981 he was the leading scorer on HHS squads that won district and regional championships. Dwight was named First Team All-State in 1980 and First Team All-District and All-Regional in 1981. He scored more than 1000 points in his basketball career and was selected to play in the Virginia High School League All-Star game following graduation in 1981.
As a football player, Dwight was a stand-out wide receiver. He was a member of the 1979 team that reached the state semi-finals and in 1980, Dwight scored 100 points in a season that saw the Streaks finish with a record of 8 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie. He was selected First Team All-District and All-Regional in both his junior and senior seasons. Dwight joined the track team for his senior season and earned first team all-district honors. Following graduation, Dwight enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of the football team for 2 seasons.
