Nancy Shank Wayland was a four year performer in three sports at HHS from 1979 – 1982.
In basketball, Nancy was a valuable member of the teams, including the 1982 state runners-up.
As a gymnast, Nancy was a member of a Blue Streak team that won a district championship and placed 2nd in the regionals. Individually, she won district championships in the all-around and balance beam, advanced to state competition on the beam, and placed 4th in the state in the vault.
From 1980 – 82 Nancy was a member of three consecutive state championship tennis teams, and played at the #1 position in 1982. During that time the team compiled a record of 56 wins and 1 loss. For her tennis career, Nancy achieved a singles record of 68 wins and only two losses and was a member of the state championship doubles team in 1982.
Following graduation from HHS, Nancy enrolled at the University of Virginia, graduating in 1986 with a degree in psychology. While at UVA, Nancy participated in club tennis and multiple intramural sports. She received the “Athlete of the Year” award in intramurals. Nancy worked for the Coca-Cola company and the U.S. Olympic Committee in Atlanta before returning to Harrisonburg. Currently she is employed as a human resource professional in the health care industry and serves as a volunteer in her church, school, pta and coaches youth sports.
