Tresa F. Quarles
Coach
Tresa Quarles coached a variety of girls’ sports at HHS between 1966 and 1981 and achieved a number of milestones and records in those sports. She coached the first volleyball team at HHS; she inaugurated the first softball team in the Valley District and won the Regional championship in 1975, and also coached girl’s track and field for a year.
Coach Quarles is best known, though, for her basketball and tennis teams. Between 1966 and 1970 the HHS girls won 55 consecutive basketball games, a record that stood for many years. Under her leadership the girl’s tennis team achieved a record of 84 consecutive victories, a streak that was still intact when she retired from coaching in 1981. Unfortunately, regional and state championships were not awarded in those sports while Ms. Quarles was an active coach.
Coach Quarles is a native of Buchanan, Virginia and graduated from Madison College (now JMU) in 1957. She coached at Groveton, James River and Albemarle high schools before coming to HHS in 1966. Upon retiring from HHS in1989 Ms. Quarles entered Eastern Mennonite Seminary and has since served as a pastor, first at Linville United Church of Christ and currently at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ in Harrisonburg.
