Class of 2008
Coach
When Brownie Cummins arrived as football coach at HHS in the fall of 1970 the Blue Streaks had endured five consecutive losing seasons. Brownie’s 1970 team compiled a record of 8 wins and 2 losses. By the time he retired from coaching in 1980, his HHS teams had achieved an overall record of 96 wins, 23 losses and 3 ties. The regular season record during that time was 90-17-3. The 1971 team ended the regular season with a record of 10 wins and no losses, winning the District championship for the first time
since 1944. They outscored their opponents by a 343 – 45 margin that season.
Brownie’s 1978 team was among the best in school history. During the regular season the team had a 10-0 record, recording 8 shutouts in the process, and outscoring their opponents 304 – 12. The final 1978 record was 12 wins and 1 loss, the loss occurring in the state semi-final game. At that time the 12 wins represented the most in the 57 year history of HHS football.
Brownie’s HHS career included 3 teams with perfect 10-0 regular seasons, and 7 teams that averaged more than 29 points per game. After retiring from coaching in 1980, Brownie continued to serve HHS as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal until 1989. He completed his career in education by serving for several years in administrative positions in Rockingham County.
