Charles "Lindy" Kersh

Lindy Kersh was a three sport star at HHS from 1942 through 1945. In baseball he was the starting centerfielder on the undefeated teams of 1943 & ’44. He hit .470 in 1945. As a basketball player he was a starter and a leading scorer on the 1944 state championship team and was named to the All-Regional team in 1945. (There were no All-State teams in those days).
Lindy was split end in football and was a starter on the 1943 and ’44 Half-State championship teams. During the 1944 season he caught a touchdown pass in every game of the season and was named to the All-Regional team. Lindy was offered a football scholarship to Tennessee by the legendary coach, General Bob Neyland, but decided instead to go to Wake Forest, where he played basketball and baseball all 4 years. At 6’2” he was an excellent rebounder but also handled the ball as well as any of their guards. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the Dixie Classic, an annual tournament involving UNC, N.C. State, Duke and Wake Forest.
As a baseball player Lindy was described as a centerfielder who “glided across the outfield”. His proudest accomplishment was leading Wake Forest to the finals of the College World Series. Returning to Harrisonburg he played baseball in both the Valley League and the County League. Lindy enjoyed a successful career in banking with the Rockingham National Bank and was active for many years coaching youth teams in the Harrisonburg city leagues.
