James R. Sipe

Athlete
Jim Sipe was a three sport athlete at HHS. He was a starter on the football, basketball and baseball teams, and was captain of the football team. Upon graduation he attended the University of Richmond on a football scholarship, but an injury cut short his football career.
After graduation from Richmond Mr. Sipe earned a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School. He returned home to Harrisonburg and shortly afterward was elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. After serving two terms as Commonwealth’s Attorney, Mr. Sipe entered private practice with the law firm that still bears his name – Litten and Sipe.
During his lifetime Mr. Sipe was active in many community and service organizations. He served as President of the Harrisonburg Lions Club, Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club and as a Trustee and Senior Warden of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He also served as President of the University of Virginia Athletics Foundation and as the first President of the Harrisonburg High School Boosters Club.
