Charles “Tootie” Geil starred in both baseball and basketball at Harrisonburg High School. He was a member of the championship basketball teams of 1944 and 1945. He was also a three year starter in baseball and lettered one year in football.
After graduating from HHS in 1946 he received an athletic scholarship to Shenandoah College (then a two year school) and lettered in both basketball and baseball. In 1948 he batted .474 and had a string of 10 consecutive hits. Tootie then entered Bridgewater College and played basketball and baseball during his time there. He graduated in 1950.
Tootie played baseball nine years in the valley league and served as an officer of the league for 42 years. He retired from Merck after 33 years as a supervisory shift chemist. Tootie and his wife Lois both started for three years on their HHS basketball teams and both wore # 17. Tootie says his blood will always have a tinge of blue in it.
