Tommy Burke was a two sport star in football and track & field at Harrisonburg High School in the mid-1940’s. He was a four year starter as a lineman on the football team. Tommy was the only freshman to start on the 1944 half-state championship team and he was chosen as a co-captain of the 1947 team.
In track and field he held the school record in the shotput for 37 years. Tommy went to William & Mary on a football scholarship and played guard on the football team for 4 years. He also lettered in track & field and swimming. Tommy entered the Air Force upon graduation from William & Mary and played guard for the Hamilton Air Force Base football team. After military service, Tommy graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. He moved to Strasburg and practiced dentistry until his retirement in 1991. He was active in numerous civic and professional organizations.
