Bobby Furr starred in three sports at Harrisonburg High School between 1951 and 1953. He was the starting quarterback on the 1951 and ’52 football teams and won the “Best Back” award on the
1952 team that compiled a record of 7 wins and 2 losses. In basketball, Bobby was the starting point guard on the 1952 state championship team and the 1953 team that lost to Marion in the state semi-final.
He was the starting shortstop for the baseball team for 3 years, 1951-’53. Bobby was voted the “most athletic” male in the senior class of 1953. After graduating from HHS, bobby entered Hampden-Sydney college in 1953 on an athletic scholarship. He lettered in football as a freshman, then joined the Marines and served for 2 years. He returned to Hampden-Sydney in 1956 and was the starting quarterback on the 1956 and 1957 teams. The 1957 team won 8 games against only 1 loss. Bobby was named to the Miller and Rhodes/Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State football teams in 1956 and 1957. After returning to Harrisonburg, Bobby coached Midget football in the city recreation league for several years and was head coach of the all-star team for 3 years.
