Vic Smith is an honored contributor and historian to HHS athletics. His contributions to the Hall of Fame Committee nd the general archival information are of great value to the Blue Streak Community. As a high school student at HHS Vic participated in Golf and Football. His work as statistician was vital for both the team and local newspaper outlets who depended on his reports for their Saturday morning editions.
Vic's passion for HHS sports and the accomplishments of so many outstanding athletes led him to found the HHS Hall of Fame project in 2008. In his own words: "I have greatly enjoyed preserving the memories of days gone by. I have enjoyed researching the accomplishment of former student athletes and bring them to the attention of the committee, seeing them eventually selected as HoF inductees if warranted." Many of those former athletes might not have been remembered had it not been for the efforts of Vic Smith and his HoF committee. Vic is a valued and significant historian of Blue Streak athletics, many of which go all the way back into the 20s, 30s and 40s.
Vic's work of going through old newspaper articles, yearbooks, scrapbooks and other sources of information is extensive. Many of the volumes of data were compiled and archived by the late Bob Sullivan who himself is a member of the HHS HoF.
Some facts and interesting figures on Vic's work include Identifying football running backs rushing for over 100 yards/game since 1960 (48 athletes have accomplished this). 10 athletes did it 10 times with Alex Owah a whopping 28 games over 100 yards rushing. The most yards in a single game was by Chris Hart who gained 420 years in 1986. Michael Holmes came close with 413 in 2009(and a mere 390 years by halftime). Vic Smith considers his efforts on behalf of the HHS Hall of Fame a humbling "labor of love". The Harrisonburg Athletic community is very appreciative of his efforts and honors him with "Hall of Fame" status.
