After a stellar athletic career at Fort Defiance High School where he won 9 letters in 3 sports and a Valley District Golf Champion title, he attended and graduated from JMU.

Mike became the Golf Coach at HHS. Teaching for Harrisonburg City Schools, Mike also coached JV Girls Basketball, JV Softball and Boys Freshman Basketball. Mike's golf teams at HHS enjoyed many team and individual championships.

The HHS Golf Teams enjoyed notable success under the coaching of Mike. Those accomplishments include a '97 VA State Championship, Runner-up in '95 and 3rd in '96. They were Regional Champions in '94, '95, '96 and '06. Mike's teams won 10 District Championships.

Mike also coached individual State Champions Kirk Straughen in '97, runner-up Brett Holsinger in '97 and Runner-up Stewart Surratt in '07, as well as, Phil Bowers and Kemper Funkhouser-All State status in '95-96.

Mike stayed involved in Blue Streak athletic life as a staff helper and spotter in football for many years. He currently teaches for the city elementary program and is a well-traveled basketball official for the SBOA.
