Phil's running career spanned all four years of his HHS years.  He earned All-District, Region, and All State titles in Cross Country, winning the VA State title as a senior.  In track and field he ran both the 1600 and 3200 to All District, Region, and All State recognition.  He was VA State Champion in the 3200 his senior year.  He was named All-District 10 times, All-Region 6 times, and All State 3 times including 2 state titles.

Other notable accomplishments include:  a school record in the 3200 m run, Top Ten All-Time in HHS history in the 1600, team member of the '86 Boys Cross Country District and Regional Champion teams, and the 1988 District Champion Boys Track Team.  Phil continued his career at JMU where his was Junior All-American.  After graduating from JMU, he opened a running shop business and was sponsored by Brooks, New Balance, and Asics in his post-graduate running career.
