Gary Bugg
Coach
For more than 35 years Gary Bugg was involved in virtually every aspect of the HHS track & field and cross-country programs. Gary began working at HHS in 1977 as head track and field coach and also as an assistant to Steve May (HOF 2013) on the boy’s cross-country team. In 1979 he began the girl’s cross-country team, serving as head coach through the fall of 1999. At that time he transitioned to an assistant position with the outdoor track & field program, a position he held until his retirement.
Gary was also head coach of the track and field program from 1977 until it disbanded in the 1980’s, then became the assistant coach when the program restarted in 2001. As girl’s cross-country coach his team won the district championship in 1991 and finished runner-up 6 other times as well as regional runners-up in 1988 & 1999. Many of his runners earned All-District and All-Regional honors and Briana Shelton was a 2 time All-State runner. His achievements are most impressive.
In indoor track and field, Coach Bugg was the assistant coach for 7 district championship squads, 4 boys and 3 girls, as well as the 2008 regional championship. As an assistant for outdoor track coach Bugg was part of 17 district championships, 5 regional championships and 3 state championships (2 girl’s and 1 boy’s). Oh, by the way, he also drove the team bus to the competitions!
