Allen Howdyshell
Class of 1982
Contributor
For 30 years Allen Howdyshell was the behind the scenes backbone of the HHS athletic program. Serving as groundskeeper for athletic facilities, equipment manager for the football team, and anything else that needed to be done to support HHS athletics, Allen could always be counted upon to do the things that never get noticed ---until they don’t get done. Allen always got them done! As one HHS coach put it: “Allen was always there. Wherever he needed to be, he was. Whatever needed to be done, he did.” For his continuing efforts and contributions Allen was recognized by the faculty and staff of HHS with the 1989 Blue Streak Award, an annual recognition of service to the school.
While a student at HHS, Allen earned 12 letters as a manager of various teams, including football, wrestling, baseball and track. He was chosen for the Senior Citizenship Award in 1982. After graduation, Allen began working at HHS and also attended Blue Ridge Community College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in business. He served for 18 years as a head coach in the Harrisonburg little league program. In 1999 he was recognized with the Outstanding Service Award.
