In 1979 Wayne Byrd capped a brilliant golf career at HHS by winning the state championship on the 2nd playoff hole at Keswick Country Club in Charlottesville. He became the 1st Blue Streak golfer to accomplish this feat. His 4 year record at HHS is unparalleled. He had the lowest stroke average all 4 seasons and was the individual medalist in every match he played as a freshman and sophomore.
In district tournaments he was runner-up his 1st 2 seasons and was district champion his junior season. In regional play Wayne finished 2nd as a freshman and sophomore and 3rd as a junior. In state tournaments Wayne placed 6th as a freshman and was state runner-up as a sophomore and junior. In 1979 Wayne won the Group AA “Grand Slam” as a senior, winning district, regional and state championships. While still in high school Wayne won a number of local and regional open tournaments. For his accomplishments Wayne was awarded a full golf scholarship to the University of South Carolina.
After his freshman season, Wayne turned professional and began the wandering career of a pro golfer. He played on mini-tours in Florida, Arizona and California among others and was the leading money winner on the Golden State Tour in California in 1987 & 1988. Over the years, Wayne played on a number of professional tours. Some of which included the NGA pro tour, Canadian and Australian tours and the Web.com tour, as well as participation in eleven PGA tour qualifying events. Today Wayne resides in La Quinta, California where he is a golf professional at the Madison Club.
