Doug Ehlers was a three-year performer in three sports for HHS between 1978 and 1981. As a sophomore in 1979 he was a member of the Blue Streak basketball team led by Ralph Sampson (HOF 2 009) that won its second consecutive state championship. Doug was the 3rd leading rebounder and 4th leading scorer on that team. This was followed by regional championship teams in 1980 & 1981 that suffered losses in the state semi-finals in 1980 and the state championship game against Martinsville in 1981. Doug was the leading rebounder and third leading scorer on both of those teams. The Streaks compiled a record of 68 wins and 11 losses over those 3 seasons. Doug was named to the All-Tournament teams in 1979 & 1980, and was voted 2nd Team All-District in 1981.
In football, Doug was a back-up quarterback on the 1978 team that was undefeated during the regular season and reached the state semi-finals before losing. He was the quarterback on the 1979 team, and then led the Streaks to the district championship, then a regional win over Robert E. Lee. Doug threw for 21 touchdowns and ran for 6 more to lead the Streaks. He was named 1st team All-Valley district and 2nd team All-Region. Doug was also a 3 year starter on the baseball team.
Doug earned a full football scholarship to the University of Richmond and was a member of the team for 4 years, he was plagued by injuries during his career and played very little but did see limited action his sophomore and junior years. Doug lives in Richmond where he is an account executive. He is active with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Metro Richmond.
