Sharon Gilkerson Johnson
Class of 1982
Athlete
Sharon Gilkerson Johnson compiled an outstanding record while a member of 3 HHS tennis teams that won consecutive state championships from 1980-82. Her coach, Mary Evelyn Neville (HOF 2010), declared that Sharon was “the best left-handed tennis player in group AA.” That may have been an understatement! Sharon was a 4 year starter in both singles and doubles. She played in every singles match over those 4 years, compiling a record of 69 wins and only 3 losses.
Her record was even better in doubles. She was undefeated in doubles over her entire 4 year career. As a senior she teamed with Nancy Shank Wayland (HOF 2010) at #1 doubles. They posted a perfect 17-0 record and won the state championship. Sharon was also a member of the Blue Streak cheerleading squad. She was on the JV squad as a freshman and sophomore, then moved up to varsity her final two years. After graduating from HHS, Sharon entered Virginia Tech, graduating in 1986. She earned a master’s degree from American University in 1990.
Sharon and her family reside in Winchester, Massachusetts where she is employed in the public school system. She has also worked in health careers and in commercial real estate, and has served as a board member for four non-profit organizations. She remains active in tennis, playing several times a week, and has also played USTA events in the Boston area.
