Jeff Stickley, a 3-year member of the Blue Streaks football and baseball teams from 1969 – 1971 played offensive lineman and defensive linebacker. Jeff was a member of the 1971 undefeated football team led by Coach Brownie Cummins (HoF 2008). The ’71 team was district champions. His ’71 team achieved the best record in school history and the 1st district championship since the 1943.
Jeff’s diminutive stature (5’9 - 172 lbs.) proved vital to the team’s success, as he earned 1st team all-district honors as both guard and linebacker. Jeff, also a 3-year letterman as a shortstop in baseball, earned 1st team all-district honors as a senior.
Off the field, Jeff was a standout student leader at HHS. His classmates voted him class president 3 times in 4 years. Jeff won the Daily News-Record Leadership Award, the Elk’s Youth Leadership Award and was the Jaycees Sportsman of the Year.
After graduation, Jeff enrolled at Emory and Henry where he played football in 1972 and 1973. Jeff then transferred to Bridgewater College where he was a member of the 1974 football team. Jeff began his coaching career at HHS as a Blue Streak assistant coach, moving eventually to Washington and Lee University where he served as assistant football coach and head baseball coach for more than 30 years. He holds the W&L record for all time wins as baseball coach, was a 4 time Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, amassed 8 seasons of 20 or more wins and saw 3 of his players sign professional baseball contracts.
Jeff lives in Lexington with his wife Daphne. His daughter Sarah Elizabeth is a graduate of the University of Virginia.
