CATHY FISHER BRYANT

Cathy Fisher Bryant was a female track athlete who led the way to a dominant HHS girls track and field program under the direction of coach J J Updike (HoF 2011) from 1978 through 1981. Cathy earned a total of 10 varsity letters in basketball, indoor and outdoor track during her HHS career. Her greatest accomplishments were in outdoor track where her amazing talent spanned beyond HHS to the national NCAA level.
Cathy was a member of three district basketball championship teams and a regional 23-1 championship team. Cathy excelled on the court as a defender and rebounder, second to Valerie Sampson (HoF 2013) in career rebounds.
Cathy excelled in outdoor track dominating the relays and long jump. She contributed points to the team that won 44 consecutive dual meets, 3 District, 2 Regional and the 1979 State Championship. Cathy holds the school long jump record of 19’ 3.5’’ and finished 7th. She ran on the 4x200-meter relay teams winning 3 consecutive individual state championships.
After graduating from Frederick Community College (1981-83), Cathy enrolled at Eastern Kentucky in 1983. During her career Cathy was a 7 time All-American in the long jump, two-time national champion in the long jump and MVP and female athlete of the year at Frederick, 1981 and 1982. In 1981 Cathy represented the United States Track Team overseas in the long jump competition. In 1984 she tried out for the U.S. Olympic team in the long jump only to be edged out by Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Cathy now resides in Crestview, Florida.
