Donald “DonDon” Burgess was a three year member of the HHS basketball team (1987-1990). As a junior he was named 2nd Team All-District but he exploded onto the scene as a senior when he led the Valley District in scoring, including three games with 34 points each, and was named 1st Team All-District and All-Regional, then he was selected to play in the Coaches All-Star game after the season.
Dondon received a scholarship to Radford University where he excelled, leading the team to the best four year record in school history, 78 wins and 39 losses. At the end of his career, Dondon had an average of 12.4 points per game and ranked 2nd in points (1, 452), 5th in rebounding (614), 3rd in blocked shots (84) and 4th in steals (162). His 40.2 % of 3 point attempts made was the best in school history. Dondon’s greatest individual game came when he made a last second shot to defeat LSU 73-72, capping a 20 point, 12 rebound, 5 assist performance. Radford won the Southern Conference Championship during Dondon’s sophomore year and he was voted team captain his senior year.
Since his graduation from Radford, Dondon has been an assistant coach at four Division I programs – University of Central Florida, Coastal Carolina University, VMI and High Point. He is currently head coach at Bridgewater College. Dondon lives in Bridgewater with his wife, Stephanie, and their two children.
