Carol Johnson Raymond was an amazing runner for the Harrisonburg girl’s track team from 1976 through 1979. She was a member of the 1979 Blue Streak team that won district, regional and state championships. That year she was a
member of the state championship 4x400 relay team and was the individual champion in the 400m. Her times in those events still stand as Harrisonburg High School records. Carol also set the school record for the 200m her junior year and it too, still stands as a school record.Carol was a four year all district performer in track and was undefeated in dual and tri meets for her entire career. In 1979 she placed 7th as an individual in the 400m in the national meet at the Atlanta Track Classic and ran the anchor leg of the 4x400 relay to a 7th place finish at the same meet.
Carol was also a three year member of the Blue Streak girl’s basketball team. She earned 2nd team All-District honors as a junior and senior, and was team captain her senior year. Carol was selected as the first recipient of the Blue Streak Award.
After graduation from HHS, Carol attended East Tennessee State University where she was competed in track from 1979-81. In 1981, she was a member of the 800m relay team that established a school record that still stands today. Carol graduated from Eastern Mennonite University. She is the owner/planner of the “Main Event Creations by Carol” in Harrisonburg and is a member of the Harrisonburg/Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, President of the New York-Virginia club, secretary of John Wesley United Methodist Church and a committee member of the African-American Festival.
