Jack Hale
Coach
Jack Hale spent the final 18 years of a highly successful 39 year coaching career as a three sport coach at Harrisonburg High School where he coached football, baseball and girls’ basketball. He was an assistant football coach for 18
years under three coaches, including hall of famer’s Brownie Cummins (HOF 2008) and Tim Sarver (HOF 2012). His football duties were as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator. During those years the Blue Streaks posted a record of 126 wins, 43 losses and 2 ties.
Jack spent 8 seasons as girl’s Junior Varsity basketball coach with a record of 101 wins and 55 losses then became head coach for the 2000-01 season when his team won 14 games and lost 7. Coach Hale was voted Valley District Coach of the Year for that season.
In baseball, Jack coached a total of 18 seasons, 15 as head coach, between 1978 and 1995. His teams won a total of 156 games in that time, including the Valley District Championship in 1991. The 1992 team finished with a record of 20 wins and 5 losses, the last being a heart-breaking final inning loss in the state championship game. Jack was voted the 1992 Valley District Coach of the Year.
Jack graduated from Grundy High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was a four year member of the basketball team at Emory and Henry College, where he graduated in 1963. Prior to coming to Harrisonburg, he coached at Rockbridge High School (1963-71) serving as head coach in basketball and baseball and assistant in football. He then coached at Southampton High School (1971-77) where he also served as head coach in baseball and basketball and assistant coach on Southampton’s football teams that reached the state finals five consecutive years, winning state championships in 1973 and 1976. Jack remains active in sports today, having served more than 25 years as the shot clock operator for the JMU men’s & women’s basketball teams and as spotter for JMU's home football games.
