Lary Savides’ accomplishments as a wrestler at Harrisonburg High School place him among the elite wrestlers in Blue Streak and Valley District history. Lary was a 4 year starter on HHS teams that were highly competitive at the regional and state levels. He compiled an outstanding career record of 88 wins, 5 losses and one draw. As an individual, Lary was a 3 time valley district champion, 3 time Region II champion and placed in the state tournament 3 times. He was runner – up as a sophomore, 3rd as a junior and won the Group AA state championship as a senior in 1981.
After graduating from hhs lary went on to Appalachian State University, where he had a highly successful 4 year career. At Appalachian State, Lary recorded third, first and second place finishes at the Southern Conference Tournament. In 1984 Lary became the first and only wrestler from HHS to qualify for the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships. Lary graduated from Appalachian State in 1987, earning bachelor’s degrees in both political science and business administration.
