Coach
Steve May is one of the pioneers of the Harrisonburg High School track program where he served from 1971-2005. Included were 17 years as head cross country coach and 30 years as assistant track coach. Coach May’s cross country teams won 3 district championships, a regional championship and a state runner-up trophy.
As assistant track coach, Steve was responsible for distance runners and hurdlers. The athletes he coached won many district and regional awards and at least 8 individual state championships. In 2002 Steve was recognized as the “Track Assistant Coach of the Year for the State of Virginia.” Besides his coaching responsibilities, Steve is widely recognized for his contributions as an administrator of track events. He served as meet director for district, regional and state championships and has been the starter at all track events at Harrisonburg High School for more than 30 years, as well as for many district, regional and state meets. Many of the track starters in this area were trained by Coach May.
Steve was a three sport athlete at Broadway High School and is a 1966 graduate of Bridgewater College, where he competed in football, track and cross-country. He served as co-captain of both track and cross country during his senior year. Upon graduation from Bridgewater, Steve became head track coach at Turner Ashby High School. In his five years as track coach his teams won 4 district championships and were twice state runner-up and won a state championship. He earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia and came to Thomas Harrison Middle School in 1971 where he served as a guidance counselor as well as his coaching duties at HHS until his retirement in 2005.
